Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Vanguard Alta Pro 264AT 26mm 4-Section Aluminum Alloy Tripod Legs, Maximum Height 61", Supports 15.4 lbs.Customer Review: This was a fantastic tripod, but... Summary: 3 Stars
So, before I go into my review, I would like to say, I loved this tripod for the short time that I owned it, but there was one fatal flaw on my model that users should be are of.
I bought this tripod two weeks before this incident happened. I bought if for my Sigma 150-500mm lens. I secured the lens on my sbh 200 ball head which was rated for 44 lbs. I secured the system with the three set screws and was in business. two days later I was setting up for a nice lake side shot when I noticed the ball head was loose on the mounting plate. after only a moment of fiddling the entire ball head assembly just fell off the tripod mounting bracket. The culprit? a small adapter from 3/8 to 1/4. it had split in two and the ball head lost it's support. This was not a fault of the ball head, rather the mounting bracket for the tripod. I brought the entire product back to my retail site and they quickly informed me that it had to be a fluke. I had the experience sales person re attach my ball head with a new adapter of course and was convinced that this was just a fluke. Two weeks go by with out any incident, Then on new years even I was out taking pictures of waterfowl with my big sigma lens attached. I had been setting up and breaking down my set up all afternoon. (no quick and easy short cuts for me, i.e. carrying the lens and tripod assembly over my shoulder, I know that much at least) While finishing up my last locations I reached to for my bag, when I heard a crack followed by a smash. The lens took a header along with my camera and teleconverter. Thankfully the giant lens hood for my lens took the brunt of the 5 foot fall onto solid concrete, this saved the lens elements n my sigma, but the next thing to hit the ground was the ball head with the lens mount still securely attached this destroyed my mounting system for the lens and severed the communication ribbon to operate my lens. effectively destroying it. My camera was saved with out a scratch, probably because the lens hood, lens mount and ball head took the beating. The culprit, the same screw adapter problem as to the prior indecent.
The camera shop refunded their product for me and did everything they could to convince vanguard that I didn't do anything wrong and to pay for the repairs on my lens. they declined to do so and I am a little angry about that. But I am a reasonable person, I understand that this was just a fluke, hopefully, Vanguard couldn't be held responsible for every thing that happens, besides I will still have my beautiful lens fixed by sigma under warranty, it was just as new also.
My local retail store owner didn't see the situation quite as calmly as I did. he insisted that vanguard pull all of their "defective" merchandise from his store, and I can't blame him for that. He can't have a reputation for selling a bad product, especially as bad as one as this mounting bracket system.
OK, that's enough for the negative. I really want to let you know about the good features of this tripod.
It's light wight, it has that really cool and useful multi positional center shaft, the extension latches were smooth and sturdy, the multi positional legs are very sturdy, I have no doubt this tripod can hold the described weight, my only concern still happens to be the 1/4 inch screw. I wouldn't trust it with a big lens again, I feel that it would be fine under small lens conditions but nothing more than that. Just a warning.
This really is a good tripod, aside from one POTENTIALLY fatal design flaw. I probably won't buy vanguard again, but I still love that ball head, even though I can't use it anymore. Just be careful with any product you buy I guess.
